Carmel

ongoing

A typically Californian modernism, preserved and extended.

In Carmel, facing a forest of eucalyptus and cedar, a 1950 Californian modernist house is about to double in size without losing any of its soul. The approach is clear: preserve the original part, a small jewel of post-war architecture, and build its contemporary version around it, fully respecting its character.

The studio is sourcing materials true to the period and to this region known for its redwood, so that old and new become one. Colours take their cue from the surrounding nature, and the light filtered through the trees guides the design of the spaces.

Designed for owners with a passion for design, the house is taking shape through careful attention to detail: every element, old or new, is chosen so that the two eras answer each other naturally.
